Archive for October, 2010

Halloween is based on an ancient holiday ‘All Hallows Eve’.  November 1 was declared All Saints’ Day (All Hallows Day). Therefore, October 31 became All Hallows Eve, in time shortened to “Halloween.”

Did you know…

  • “Phasmophobia” is a fear of ghosts.
  • The legend of the Jack-O-Lantern comes from Ireland.
  • Worldwide, bats are the most important natural enemies of night-flying insects.
  • Ancient people appeased evil spirits of the dead (and their masked impersonators) by setting out gifts of food and drink.
  • 9% of Americans report having been in the presence of a ghost.
  • Wiccaphobia is the fear of witches and witchcraft.

One of the strangest, but apparently true! reports heard about Halloween is that during WWII, Americans tried to train bats to drop bombs. They failed. Who thought that one up?
